The Source of Life

There's something remarkable about rice in Bali. Every stalk that grows here isn't seen simply as a commodity or just food. Rice in Bali is treated like a living being, the same as us humans. Every stage from beginning to end has its ceremony — every part of the process is celebrated, just as we celebrate our own lives.

I still remember one afternoon when my mother asked me to do Mebiukukung — this is a ceremony held when the rice begins to bear fruit. I walked through the stretches of green rice paddies, looking for our small temple in the middle of the field. I performed the ceremony with a simple offering, praying with gratitude and asking for fertility for our rice plants. Then I sat and looked out at all those stalks around me. How true it is that we depend on them — on nature — not the other way around.

I began to wonder at how beautiful and noble our ancestors' teachings about nature are. Every stage of growth celebrated, given meaning. I felt a deep connection between the natural world and the people in it.

So every plate of rice I enjoy now doesn't just fill my stomach — it connects me to its source. To nature itself.


Padi

Ada hal menarik di Bali tentang padi. Setiap padi yang tumbuh di Bali tak hanya dilihat sebagai komoditi atau hanya sekedar makanan. Padi di Bali diperlakukan layaknya makhluk hidup, sama seperti kita manusia. Setiap proses dari awal hingga akhir kami upacarai — semua proses dirayakan sama seperti kami merayakan kehidupan kami.

Aku masih ingat saat suatu sore ibuku memintaku Mebiukukung — ini adalah upacara saat padi mulai berbuah. Aku berjalan di antara hamparan padi yang hijau, mencari pura kecil kami di tengah sawah. Aku melakukan upacara dengan banten sederhana dan aku sembahyang menghaturkan rasa syukur dan memohon kesuburan untuk tanaman padi kami, lalu aku duduk memandangi padi-padi itu. Betapa sejatinya kita yang bergantung dengan mereka — dengan alam — bukan mereka yang bergantung akan kita.

Aku mulai mengagumi betapa indah dan mulia ajaran leluhur kami tentang alam, di mana setiap pertumbuhan mereka dirayakan, dimaknai. Aku merasakan keterhubungan yang dalam antara alam dan manusianya.

Jadi setiap nasi di piringku yang kunikmati tak hanya mengenyangkan perutku — namun aku juga terhubung dengan sang sumber: alam itu sendiri.
